As the San Francisco Giants entered the 2018 season, optimism ruled because of recognizable new additions like Andrew McCutchen and Evan Longoria. But as the season ended, at a relatively disastrous 73-89, disappointment took over and a gloomy outlook persisted going into the offseason.
But as the Winter Meetings came and went more than two months ago, the assumption that new President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi would start the team’s rebuild by trading No. 1 starter Madison Bumgarner evaporated. It was replaced by tepid hope as Zaidi committed to competing in 2019, driving home the point by currently being in a flirty relationship with free-agent star outfielder Bryce Harper.
What’s New
Because of bad contracts signed by the previous front-office regime, the Giants are limited to the money they can take on without going over the competitive balance tax threshold ($206 million). This makes Zaidi’s job incredibly difficult, whether it’s trying to compete in the National League West or unloading those ugly contracts.
That’s why the moves to this point in the offseason have been uninspiring – signing pitchers Derek Holland and Drew Pomeranz have been the biggest headliners. But the Giants have now become opportunists as spring training creeps closer.
